Pride.....

Today leaving the proud city of Washington. It was great to learn so much about about the historical context of America in this proud city. Visiting all the monuments and especially the National Mall situated between the National monument and the Capitol. Visiting these places combined with the presentations of several educational institutions and associations gave a better understanding in the fundamental ideas of universities and Community Colleges in America. The fundamental right to education and the deeply felt connection to the freedom of mind was heartwarming to experience. Even if issues as completion, cost and quality of (higher) education as much a concern as they are in the Netherlands I could feel the deep sense of pride here.
The many lobbyists trying to increase their influence in Associations and in politics is quite a difficult  "dance for money" that is far more complex compared to in the Netherlands. Both the Netherlands and America have good and bad sides to their educational system. Looking at way Americans show pride in their country, and aspects of their educational system is actually good. We tend to look at Americans as always acting to be "bigger and better" but us dutch could also show some more enthusiasm at the achievements we have made over the years in our educational system. Working in education we all know the way our heart jumps when suddenly the "penny has dropped", when there is a sudden flash of understanding. To see eyes lit up...
We are so lucky to have so many men and women caring about our students, caring about getting the best out of people and open up the world of the next generation. Pride would not always be our first  word to choose, but at least... We can feel like we are the lucky ones being able to work in education
